ABOUT THE POSITION

Postion Summary:
The Tandem and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (TAMS) Laboratory is iThemba LABS’ laboratory for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), Ion Beam Analysis (IBA), and low-energy nuclear reactions and astrophysics studies. TAMS is located in Parktown, Johannesburg, and has about Thirty (30) staff covering the areas of AMS, IBA, Accelerator technology, and support functions. The flagship research platforms of the TAMS Lab includes a 6 MV Tandem Accelerator with a low energy Injection and analysis systems for AMS measurements of 14C, 10Be, and 26Al; a nuclear microprobe and a spectrometer for heavy ion elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA); ion implanters (Varion-Extrion 350D/300XP and Varian 200-20A); a low-energy nuclear-reaction set-up; and an environmental radiation laboratory.

  • Leadership roleStrategic leadership of the TAMS Lab and its positioning nationally and internationally at the cutting edge technically and scientificallyLeadership of the scientific directions and research programming at the TAMS Lab Overall leadership of staff at the TAMS Laboratory to maintain excellent levels of productivity and monitoring of the workload of functional areas and overall quality of work as well as attraction and management of talent across the functional areas
  • Conceptualization, initiation and hosting of national and international scientific & technical meetings in the fields of specialization of the TAMS LabLeading stakeholder engagement and management for all users, clients and beneficiaries of scientific/technical services of TAMS Lab Taking responsibility for an effective leadership of the interface between TAMS Lab and the rest of the iThemba LABS operational environmentManagement roleManagement of research infrastructure platforms at the cutting edge nationally and internationally, including holistic life cycle managementDefinition and maintenance of standards and protocols for research infrastructure access and provisionManagement of service excellence in the provision of scientific services by the TAMS Lab Managing the laboratory’s day to day operational budget including capital resource allocations across different sections of the laboratory in line with NRF planning cycles and financial policiesManaging staff provisioning and staff succession planning in line with NRF:iThemba LABS institutional equity targets and policiesOverseeing the management of post-graduate students supervised/co-supervised by staffManagement of safety, health and environmental functions within the TAMS Lab in line with statutory requirements and NRF Policies and procedures
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory framework governing supply chain management, and in line with NRF policies and proceduresRepresenting the general interest of the TAMS Laboratory at iThemba LABS management and at other relevant strategic platforms
