Pupils (called Learners by the Department of Education) are usually between the ages of 11,12 and 13.
Seventh grade is a year or level of education in the South africa. The seventh grade is the eighth school year, the second or third year of middle school, and the first year of junior high school. Students are around 12-13 years old in this stage of education.

What are the aims of the EMS subject?
EMS aims to equip learners with the real-life skills that they will need to succeed as a business owner or entrepreneur. It has an emphasis on different types of resources to satisfy people’s needs and wants. It’s a practical subject that will contribute to each learner’s personal development as well as sustainable economic growth and the development of the community. As part of the subject, learners will study effective management of scarce resources to maximise profit.
What is learned about in the EMS subject?
Different subjects related to the economy, financial literacy and entrepreneurship are focussed on throughout Senior Phase EMS lessons. Learners will spend 30% of their time on the economy, 30% on entrepreneurship, and 40% of learning time will be spent on financial literacy teaching.
EMS helps learners to understand the needs and wants of different communities and societies, so that they can formulate effective plans to meet those needs. They will also learn about the production process of different goods and services, and how businesses operate within the different sectors.
The class will also learn about financial management. This not only serves as a great tool in business, but alto to help them keep track of their own finances in later life. The flow of money through a business and ways to achieve sustainable growth are also looked at.
This is taught from the angle of how we can reduce poverty and distribute wealth fairly while still aiming to create a profitable business model. The subject aims to empower learners to start their own business, giving them an understanding of the entrepreneurial skills needed to manage themselves and the environment effectively.
Learners are also taught about leadership and management which are really valuable skills in running a business. The functioning of both formal and informal business will be studied, alongside the role of business savings, the importance of using resources sustainably and trade unions and their influence on the economy.
